kish Project

This island is located in the north east of the Persian Gulf with a minimum distance of 17 km from the southern shore of the mainland of Iran, and 1600 kilometers from the capital City of Tehran. Kish Island, with an area of 90 square kilometers, is one of the most marvellous and most beautiful regions of the Persian Gulf. It has attracted attention of many tribes and nations for centuries. Kish Island is oval in shape and very wide. The island is largely flat, sandy and uncultivated with high point of 45 meters above sea level. Although it is very hot and humid in summer, it has a very pleasant weather pattern from November to March with an annual average temperature of 27 degrees centigrade. It has beautiful beaches and calm water on the north-western and western shores. The southern shores are rocky and washed by the waves brought by the sea winds. Its beautiful coasts are covered with white silvery sand.

Already a famous island, Kish owes its present flourishing to its status as Iran's first (and for along time) the only free port. It has a history of about 3000 years, being called under various names such as Kamtina, Arakata, and Ghiss over the course of time. The island is known for the quality of its pearls and its sweet water. This island fell into decline in the 14th century when it was taken over by Hormoz. It remained obscure and it was developed as a private retreat until just before the Revolution. After the Revolution, the new government appointed a very professional team of managers to establish Kish as a free zone, and developed it accordingly. It now has become one of the most important centers of tourism in Iran.
